For virtual assistant work, start with the tasks you need to perform, then choose a laptop that can handle them comfortably. Email, spreadsheets, browser-based client tools, and video calls need a different setup from demanding video editing.

Research-based buying guide: We have not hands-on tested laptops for this article. Specifications below are our editorial shortlist criteria, not benchmark results or a claim that one model is best. Check the work before choosing the laptop

List your expected applications and ask a prospective client about required software, operating system, security tools, and any hardware requirements. If you are still learning, test the computer you already own before spending money. Our virtual assistant starter guide explains how to practise without assuming you need an expensive setup.

Microsoft currently lists 4 GB of RAM as a minimum for the Windows desktop Teams client. That is an application minimum, not our recommendation for a whole working day with several applications open. Check Microsoft’s official Teams requirements for details and updates.

Our shortlist criteria for everyday VA work

Editorial starting points for email, documents, spreadsheets, browser tools, and calls
ComponentWhat to compare
MemoryPrefer 16 GB when affordable for multitasking. Consider 8 GB for lighter work only after checking your applications and upgrade options.
StorageAn SSD; compare 256 GB and 512 GB against your files and applications. Storage capacity is not the same as memory.
ProcessorRecord the complete processor model and generation. A Core i5 or Ryzen 5 label alone does not establish performance.
ScreenPrefer at least 1920 × 1080 resolution; try the text size, viewing angles, and brightness where possible.
ConnectionsCheck ports for your headset, monitor, and accessories. Confirm what each USB-C port actually supports.
SupportAn operating system still receiving security updates and documented local warranty arrangements.

These starting points are not universal requirements. If your tasks include large datasets, creative applications, or video production, check those applications separately. Do not buy a dedicated graphics card simply because a listing describes a laptop as suitable for work.

Compare exact configurations, not just model names

The same laptop family may be sold with different processors, memory, displays, and storage. Save the full product code and specification sheet for each option. Ask whether memory is soldered, whether an upgrade is supported, and whether seller-installed changes affect support. Obtain the answers in writing.

Build a three-option shortlist: an affordable option that meets your tasks, a balanced option with more room for multitasking, and a higher-priced option whose extra features you can actually explain. If you cannot identify a useful difference, the higher price alone is not a reason to upgrade.

Where to look in the Philippines

Start with a manufacturer’s Philippine store directory so you can verify the seller independently. For example, ASUS Philippines lists concept stores, authorized multibrand stores, and official online stores. This is a way to check buying channels, not a recommendation that ASUS is the best brand for every reader.

For other brands, use their official Philippine website to confirm local purchase and service channels. Lenovo’s Philippine warranty-support page is one starting point for warranty questions. Check the exact unit and warranty terms rather than assuming every imported unit receives the same coverage.

On Lazada or Shopee, verify the actual seller and product code. Ask for an invoice, written warranty information, return conditions, and the process for a faulty unit. A familiar product photo or a low price does not establish seller authorization. Keep checkout and payment within the platform when purchasing there.

Set a total workspace budget

Include delivery, a suitable headset, any essential adapter, reliable connectivity, and software you actually need. A laptop price alone can hide the cost of a usable setup. Check whether advertised software is a legitimate included licence, a trial, or a separate subscription.

For a used or refurbished laptop, ask to test the keyboard, screen, camera, microphone, ports, charging, and battery condition. Verify that previous-owner account or organization locks are removed through legitimate processes. Obtain the condition description and return terms in writing. If you cannot inspect the unit or secure a credible remedy, factor that uncertainty into your decision.
